Tobiko
A fishy egg for everyday sessions and epic trips.
My classic fish design, the Muse, has proven itself so versatile that I wasn’t sure there was a need to refine it any further. However, the more I rode in it in really good surf (e.g., Indo reefs), the more I found myself longing for a board with a similar feel, but tuned to handle more power and curve in the wave face.
Thus, the Tobiko (fish egg) was born.
This board is a stretched-out, slimmed-down fish with some extra flip in the tips. It is designed to take the things we love about fishes and help them feel more at home in high-quality surf.
Whereas the Muse has a pretty flat deck and is meant to be ridden short and thin, this board is more foiled out and should be ridden longer/thicker. It also scales into longer sizes (up to 7’1”) really nicely.
The thing I love most about this design is that even though I made it to work in good surf, it still performs well in most of the same waves that the Muse does. It’s the kind of board you can take out at your local on an average chest-high day or put in your board bag for a trip, knowing it will handle most of what you throw at it.
When I travel, I pack one of these and a Ceylon Single, and I’m covered for just about any wave I want to surf up to 8-10ft.

Ideal Wave Size: 2-6ft
Ideal Wave Shape: Feels best when there is some curve to the face, but it will still carry speed through flatter sections.
-
Recommended Size: Meant to be ridden 2-3” longer than your fish, but it also scales really well into longer sizes (up to 7’1”).
What I ride: 6’2” x 20 3/8” x 2 5/8”

Fin Setup: Twin or quad
Recommended Template: I like this board with upright keels for that classic fish drive or with a fin somewhere between a keel and an upright twin template.
